Book review: Begin Again by Emma Lord

Hello everyone! April is going to be a very hectic month for me, but I just wanted to post a mini review of a book I read recently which was Begin Again by Emma Lord. It’s been a while since I read a proper rom-com book (I think this is the first proper rom-com I am reading this year). I just picked it up on my last visit to the bookstore, not knowing anything about it except that it was a rom-com.

This book follows Andie, who transfers from her community college to Blue Ridge State. She has crafted for herself a very detailed description of all the steps she should take to achieve her life goal of becoming a self-help figure. But the moment she reaches Blue Ridge State, all her plans are disrupted. The rest of the story just follows her semester at Blue Ridge, her making friends and finding herself.

Before we continue, there is a very slight spoiler in this review, but this comes within the first 100 pages of the book, and knowing this won’t change the experience in any way. So, I don’t really consider this a spoiler, but still, I’m letting you know right now. Okay, let’s get to the review.

The characters and their interactions with each other are the best parts of the book. Andie is by herself a very sweet character. We follow her as she tries to follow her mother’s legacy and along the way, she has to deal with her estranged father. This offers a good perspective of how each person deals with grief differently, and the impact this can have on them as well as others around them. A lot of these small side plots really help build her character throughout the story.

Not just the main character, but even the side characters have distinct storylines in this book. The author has done a great job of weaving the side characters’ plots into the main one, while also keeping them individually relevant so that every character felt real and not like cardboard cutouts. Andie has a bookstagrammer friend, Shay, as well as a writer friend, Valeria, which was honestly so cool!

As I mentioned before, part of the plot is all about Andie walking in her mother’s footsteps and she finds herself as part of the underground campus radio show that her mother founded called the Knights’ Watch along with Shay and Milo (this is the spoiler I mentioned at the beginning of the review) The segments about the show were really fun to read about and it was interesting to see how Andie solved people’s problems and how this characteristic of hers plays a major role in who she is as a person and what she does in her life.

In the end, there was something akin to a plot twist in the end, and even though I did not exactly guess it, it wasn’t too shocking. It did a great job of bringing the friends closer and was kind of the last thread that changed Andie completely.

The writing in the book was chill and light, and I think that this book would make an amazing Netflix movie. It has the right amount of drama, quirky and cute characters, a simple and fun romance, and a diverse cast of characters all neatly wrapped together in a straightforward plot.

All that being said, I did have a slight issue with the pacing in the first half of the book. The first part of the book basically tries to introduce the reader to the characters and the central plot. But I found that it took forever to get to the point, and that was kind of the problem. I know some people like this kind of pacing, but it just wasn’t for me. The pacing does get better after that, but the first 100 pages were very hard to get through.

Overall, I had a great time. I enjoyed this and will be reading more Emma Lord books. And if this ever gets made into a Netflix movie, I will definitely watch it! I gave this book 3.75/ 5 stars.

REVIEW : TAKE ME HOME TONIGHT BY MORGAN MATSON

Hey guys! The following review will be spoiler free, but it may contain some slight spoilers for “Amy and Roger’s Epic Detour” by Morgan Matson.

SYNOPSIS:

Kat and Stevie are polar opposites but still best friends. One night, they decide to take an adventure into New York. But what promises to be a fun night out turns disastrous as they lose their phone and wallet, stuck with a Pomeranian and they have to deal with family drama. Their friendship is put to a big test as they have their own adventures and try to make it to Grand Central before midnight.

MY REVIEW:

This book was a wild ride! I once started reading this book last year as a part of a Book Club, but I couldn’t read it back then. Last month, I ordered the physical copy of this book and started reading it. I had some really high expectations, but this book turned out to be totally different than what I expected.

The main portion of the story deals with Kat and Stevie. I totally adored this part of the book. There were so many fun elements in the story. Each of their adventures are packed with so much fun! I loved watching Stevie’s relationship with her step siblings grow; I loved Kat and Cary! The other amazing part of the book is the vibrant description of New York city. The way Morgan Matson describes the city is so vibrant and full of life and adventure. There were also a ton of references to real life musicals and stuff which was pretty cool. And I loved Kat and Stevie’s friendship!

Interspersed within the main story, we see the separate distinct storyline of Teri. She is Kat and Stevie’s friend, who takes over a babysitting job to cover for them. This leads to a whole different kind of adventure. Teri’s storyline was kind of funny, but way too unbelievable for me. I like adventures arising out of terribly wrong gone situations, but this was too much for me. Without giving any spoilers, the best way I can describe Teri’s story would be by comparing it to the movie “Adventures in Babysitting”.

I have read “Amy & Roger’s Epic Detour”, another of Matson’s book and I love love loved it! It was one of my all time favourite contemporaries. It’s was a little sad for me to find that Amy and Roger broke up. Btw, it took me until the very end of the book to realize that the Amy that appears in this book is the same one of the other book, hehe.

STAR RATING: 3.5/5

Book Review : Just Haven’t Met You Yet by Sophie Cousens

Hey guys, I’m back! The past month has been really hectic and I haven’t had a lot of time to read or write reviews, but I’m finally getting back on track. The recent book I read was Just Haven’t Met You Yet by Sophie Cousens, a romcom. I also recently started annotating and I am loving how it enhances my reading experience! So let’s jump right to the review!

SYNOPSIS (FROM GOODREADS)

Laura’s business trip to the Channel Islands isn’t exactly off to a great start. After unceremoniously dumping everything in her bag in front of the most attractive man she’s ever seen in real life, she arrives at her hotel only to realize she’s grabbed the wrong suitcase from the airport. Her only consolation? The irresistibly appealing contents of the case: a copy of her favorite book; piano music; and a rugged, heavy knit fisherman sweater only a Ryan Gosling lookalike could pull off. The owner of this suitcase is Laura’s dream man–she’s sure of it. Now, all she has to do is find him.

The mix-up seems written in the stars. After all, what are the odds that she’d find The One on the same remote island where her mom and dad had first fallen in love, especially as she sets out to write an article about their epic romance? Commissioning surly cab driver Ted to ferry her around seems like her best bet in both tracking down the mystery suitcase owner and retracing her parents’ footsteps. And if beneath Ted’s gruffness lies a wit that makes their cab rides strangely entertaining, so much the better. But as Laura’s long-lost luggage soulmate proves difficult to find–and as she realizes that the love story, she’s held on a pedestal all her life might not have been that perfect–she’ll have to rethink her whole outlook on love to discover what she really wants.

MY REVIEW

I got this book as part of a book subscription box and I didn’t know anything about it so I read the synopsis first. After reading fantasy novels for way long, I wanted to read something light and fluffy and romantic so I thought that this book would be perfect. And I was right!

The basic plot of this story is just like a normal romcom. There are not a lot of twists and turns, but it is a sweet and straight forward love story. But more than being just a love story, it is about rediscovering one’s identity, dealing with loss and grief and finding value in small things in life.

There is a huge variety of cast in this book. The protagonist Laura is a die – hard romantic and is always in the pursuit of finding true love. Throughout the story, we see the process of her world view being changed slowly as she finds some hard truths and becomes more mature. I loved her character representation, from being someone who looks at love through rose – tinted glasses, to understanding the many complexities in life. Ted was such a sweet character and I absolutely loved him. Apart from them, I have to mention Vanya and Dee, Laura’s best friends. They don’t physically appear much in the book, but the way Laura calls or texts them every time she has a small issue was so heart-warming to read about. Who doesn’t love a book with adorable friendships?! Laura’s strict yet strangely sweet boss Suki, Ted’s father Gerry, Jasper, everyone else in this book were so beautifully written.

I recently started annotating and writing my thoughts on my books. The number of times I drew tiny hearts and stars on the pages! There were so many sweet scenes in this book! I especially loved the character arc of Laura slowly unearthing things and understanding herself. It was such a beautiful concept.

If you are looking for a cute summer read, something to make you feel happy and light hearted, then this book is perfect for you!
