CHAIN OF GOLD BY CASSANDRA CLARE

Hey everyone!

Since Chain of iron is releasing in a few days (March 2!), I felt like this would be a perfect time to talk about Chain of gold. Chain of Gold is the first book of the Last Hours triology by Cassandra Clare. It is a part of the Shadowhunter chronicles that revolves around Shadowhunters who are a group of angelic warriors fighting demons.

WHAT TO READ BEFORE CHAIN OF GOLD?

The prescribed reading order of the Shadowhunter books is the publication order (the order in which it came out), but it is not necessary to read it in that way. Technically, it is not necessary to read anything before Chain of Gold. But I would highly recommend reading The Infernal Devices before reading Chain of Gold, especially if you haven’t read any of the Shadowhunter books. This is because, Chain of Gold is basically a sequel to TID. So, reading TID first gives a better insight into some characters and the world of the Shadowhunters.

Onto the book!

THE SETTING:

Chain of Gold follows the children and relatives of the main characters of TID.

Chain of Gold takes place in 1903 in Edwardian London. This has been a time of relative peace for the Shadowhunters as there have been no demons since the events of TID. But this changes when two Shadowhunter families move to London. Suddenly, a new race of demons (who can walk in daylight) attack London and the plague caused by the demons has no cure. The Shadowhunters are quarantined in London and the main characters realize that they have a connection to all these happenings.

THE CHARACTERS:

Chain of gold has a lot of main characters. I have introduced them down below.

Cordelia Carstairs is the main character. She is half Persian. Her parents are Sona and Elias Carstairs. At the beginning of the book, Cordelia is determined to protect her family’s honour by proving her father’s innocence in a crime he was wrongfully accused of. Cordelia is in love with James Herondale and her best friend is Lucie Herondale.

James Herondale is the son of William and Tessa Herondale (main characters of TID). Due to his lineage, James has the strange power of turning into shadows. He is in love with the mysterious Grace Blackthorn.

Lucie Herondale is James’ sister. She is an aspiring writer and also has a power of speaking to and commanding ghosts. She is best friends with Cordelia.

Matthew Fairchild is the son of Charlotte and Henry Fairchild. He is the brother of Charles Fairchild. Matthew has a secret that he has been carrying for a long time. He is best friend and parabatai of James Herondale.

Alastair Carstairs is Cordelia’s brother. He used to be a bit of bully. Thomas Lightwood is the son of Sophie and Gideon Lightwood. He has two sisters. Anna Lightwood is the daughter of Cecily and Gabriel Lightwood. She has two brothers. Christopher Lightwood is Anna’s brother. He loves science.

Grace Blackthorn is the adopted daughter of Tatiana Lightwood. She is described as a really beautiful girl and she possess siren – like abilities. And then there is Jesse Blackthorn who is technically a ghost.

Those were all the main characters.

MY THOUGHTS:

Chain of Gold was absolutely wonderful! First of all, the plot is so good. It just grips you.

The characters are all amazing. I loved each and every character (except Grace, of course). The friendship between Lucie and Cordelia is so heart warming and so is Matthew’s and James’.

Best of all, I loved how the story of each character has some significance or connection to the plot. I love books which are both character and plot driven and Chain of Gold is one of the very few books where such a perfect blend of plot and characters are found.

The romance is very heart breaking but still so great. I usually hate books where there is a sad angle to the romance. But I totally loved this one!

This book has become my fourth favourite book among the Shadowhunter chronicles (After the three books of TID). I would definitely, one hundred percent recommend this book.

Can’t wait to read Chain of Iron!
